18th May – International Museum Day
Celebrated annually around the globe International Museum Day is coordinated by ICOM (International Council of Museums).
I am often asked by teachers if there are any trips or museums for the Maya topic they could take their students to. Teachers are extremely limited in regard to school trips. The only museum in the UK that displays Maya artefacts is the British Museum and here only a few artefacts are displayed (Mexican Gallery).
My only recommendation for a school trip would be the Butterfly Farm at Stratford-Upon-Avon, I worked with the Butterfly Farm in producing its Maya exhibit. This is an immersive experience for children where replica Maya sculptures are dotted around a rainforest environment and many of the butterflies are supplied by the Fallen Stones Butterfly farm from the Maya mountains of Belize.
