Find out your Maya spirit companion

Description

Both the ancient and highland Maya today believe they have a spirit/animal companion. The ancient Maya called it their Way (pronounced ‘Why’) and the Maya today call it their Nahual (pronounced nah-waal).

Spirit companions take many forms such as an animal (e.g., reptile, bird, jaguar), elements of nature (e.g ., rain, lightning, wind, fire), or important objects to the Maya (obsidian). The 20 spirit companions are the same as the 20 sacred calendar day signs (Tzolk’in).

One side of the bookmark depicts the spirit companion and day sign for your birthdate, how the sign is spelt and likely character traits for yourself.

The other side shows your spirit companion again, what it is called in present day by the Kaqchikel Maya and what careers you would be successful in.

Instructions

1.    Have the children look up their spirit companion using Dr Diane’s converter below:

                    https://www.mayaarchaeologist.co.uk/school-resources/maya-spirit-animals

All they need to do is type their birthdate in the converter and it will tell them what they are.

2.    Print their bookmark (they are in alphabetical order and duplex format for printing), on paper or even better card.

3.    The children can then colour their bookmark on the front and back.

4.    Finally, they can cut out the bookmark along its outside line.

Now the children have their own spirit companion bookmark to keep!
